Surf City EP out Next Week
As you probably well know already, next week we release the debut EP by Auckland’s own Surf City...while you already know we think they are great – here is what a few other people have to say about them...‘It seems like decades since any New Zealand band has managed to evoke The same feeling that The Clean and Straightjacket Fits did. Mix that with how you feel about Interpol and maybe Sonic Youth and you have a fair idea.” Pavement “Their live shows fluctuate form raucously fun to fantastically loose. That genuine vulnerability and intensity is what makes them engaging not to mention entertaining. “Rip It Up

Surf City EP release Shows

Arch Hill Imports launches with Panda Bear and Beach House

Yep that’s right, we thought there is a lot of great music out there and some of it isn’t getting back here – so it made sense to start a boutique kind import service where we make available CDs that have come to our attention in our travels and the like....there isn’t going to be loads of stuff, but just the occasional release of something that has taken our fancy. Both of these album will be released on 13th of August distributed in New Zealand by Rhythm Method
First up is Person Pitch by Panda Bear, otherwise known in his better known outfit the Animal Collective as Noah Lennox. Person Pitch has been creating something of a stir offshore getting 5/5 Stars in the Guardian and 9.5/10 at Pitchfork where they say ...”hearing it all together in one place and listening to it all at one time is both overwhelming and inspirational” For more info go to his page at Arch Hill

The second release is by Baltimore’s own duo Beach House who were the best thing Arch Hill first saw live in New York at CMJ last year. Pitchfork also writes “Because they come from such a well-defined tradition-- the boy-girl duo making lovesick, narcotized rock with lots of depth and sweep-- it's pretty much impossible to listen to this, their debut, without making certain connections. Bands like Mazzy Star, Galaxie 500, Spiritualized, and Slowdive will come to mind, but this is neither pastiche nor homage.” 8.1/10 They also have a video for the first single “Master of None” and a page over on Arch Hill webspot...

Pine Vinyl and Shows
Yep this time Pine have gone the whole hog and committed the Twelve Hour Collision EP (well it’s 10 tracks) to chunky healthy vinyl, you can head over to the Arch hill website to get yourself a copy - or it will be available in stores on August the 13th as well. As you’d expect from these folks there is some very nice BIG artwork in there, including extra sized spot the difference National Geographic gorilla and band photograph...Plus look out for two upcoming live shows...
Friday 17th August Pine at the Dux De Lux, Christchurch, New Zealand
Saturday 25th of August Pine and White Swan Black Swan at Tabac, Auckland, New Zealand

Grand Prix Shows and Good Vibes
As you may well know Grand Prix released their third album at the start of July...the album has been getting a bunch of great reviews with 4/5 Stars in the NZ Herald, the Dominion Post, Grooveguide and Rip It Up...the NZ Herald even writes “McKenzie has once again proved himself one of this country’s best songwriters” Having got everyone going in the live show department in hometown Wellington they are heading north to play...
3rd and 4th and 11th August – Taranaki Arts Festival, New Plymouth, New Zealand
Thursday 16th of August Grand Prix at the Wine Cellar, Auckland, New Zealand
EVERY Tuesday in August – San Francisco Bath House residency

New Videos
We have been very lucky at Arch Hill recently with a slew of very good music videos coming across the desk – and onto the telly screens. These include a very clever animated video by Blain Hosford for Don McGlashan’s “Harbour Bridge”, a trick split personality self directed video by Pine for “Hosanna”, the afore mentioned Surf City video for “Records of A Flagpole Skater” (spot the G&R “November Rain” moment) and the already previously mentioned Luke Buda video for “Special Surprise”...these are all up on the Arch Hill home page (and in the video section) so head over to

Haints of Dean Hall August shows, with Jose Gonzales and Magnolia Electric Company

Look out from some more shows from the Haints of Dean Hall supporting a couple of very worthwhile international acts.
Friday 10th August – Haints of Dean Hall opening for the Magnolia Electric Company with the Vietnam War at the Kings Arms, Auckland, New Zealand.
Tuesday 14th August – Haints of Dean Hall opening for Jose Gonzales at the Hopetoun Alpha, Auckland, New Zealand (sold out)

Other Stuff
We also have our credit card purchasing facility on the Arch Hill website up and running so for those of you that like to have little packages arriving in the post you know where to go.
Arch Hill Compilation number four is in progress and will likely only be available at special events like gigs and with website purchases etc
Don’t forget to head along to Tilly and the Wall on August the 9th at the Kings Arms in Auckland...and tickets for the Battles on September 21st (Auckland) and 22nd (Wellington) are selling fast so we’d suggest getting in quick.
