| David Mulcahy has been writing and recording music since the early 1980's. As a member of The Jean-Paul Sartre Experience and Superette, he has gathered a back catalog of 4 albums, 2 eps, a bunch of singles and many memorable videos. David's first band, The Jean-Paul Sartre Experience, was formed during 1984 in Christchurch New Zealand. The other members of the group were Dave Yetton (now of the Stereobus), Jim Laing (Lanky), and Gary Sullivan (Currently of Dimmer, and previously Solid Gold Hell). Their first release was a self titled EP in 1986. The tracks on this EP were later included on their 1987 debut album, Love Songs. Two further albums were released, The Size of Food (1989) and Bleeding Star (1993).
At the end of a North American and European tour Dave left The Jean-Paul Sartre Experience. Following an extended stay in New York, Dave returned to Auckland, in New Zealand. Here he formed a new band called Superette (previously Monster), who included Greta Anderson on Drums (currently Ben & Greta) and Ben Howe on bass (Ben & Greta and Fang). Superette, recorded an EP (Rosepig 1995) and an Album, Tiger (1996) both with Flying Nun
In early 1998 Dave left Superette to embark on a solo recording project at Arch Hill Recording Studios. This developed into his first solo album Oddy Knocky. Encouraged by the response to his acoustic song Waves taken from the Superette album Tiger he concentrated on recording simple melodic songs in a more intimate or personal style. Although largely an acoustic album, it contains experimentations with electronica, a style of music that Dave has tinkered with for some time. Currently Dave lives in Christchurch and occasionally plays and records with his band Spider which consists of himself and two former members of The Tufnels and the Bird Nest Roys. |
